I am participating in Susanna Hill’s fantastic Halloweensie contest! Check it out! There are tons of fantastic entries this year.

The rules are simple: write a 100 word Halloween story appropriate for children (children here defined as 12 and under) (title not included in the 100 words), using the words SHIVER, CAULDRON, and HOWL.

Here’s my 99-word story:

Myra’s New School Dance

Mom thinks this stupid dance’ll make me like it here.

Great, now there’s a dance circle.

Toya’s shaking. “Do ‘The Shiiiiiivvvver’” she says. Some dance “The Shiver.” I try. Feel woozy. Stop.

Travis’s bent over. “Aaaaahhhhoooooooo!” He howls as he cranes his neck, stretching tall.  “Introducing, ‘The Werewolf!” “Aaaaahhhhhoooooo!” Some boys try. Not me. Lame.

A push! I’m in the middle!

Noooooo!

Lightbulb!

I stir a big air-circle, my hips hula-hooping. Don’t look. Keep dancing.

“What’s your cool move, Myra?” Travis asks.

“The Cauldron,” I say.

Everyone’s dancing The Cauldron! Maybe this new school isn’t so bad.

My first draft was over 400 words! I trimmed it down A LOT to get it here—such a fun exercise! This year, I pushed myself to write two very different Halloweensies. If you’d like to see my other, click here.
